Rosella Parakeet

Scientific name: Platycercus eximius

 

The eastern rosella is a bird that is native to the south-east of the Australian continent and to Tasmania.

Eastern rosellas are colourful medium-sized parrots with distinctive white cheek patches. They have a red head, neck and breast, a yellow underbody and a yellow-green to blue-green rump. They also have a red undertail.

The appearance of the male and female birds is quite similar. However, the feathers of the female can be duller in colour. Young birds are duller than adults. They can be aged by their bill colour, which is initially yellow or orange and changes to an off-white colour when the bird is mature.
