Syrian Hamster
Scientific name: Mesocricetus auratus
Hamsters are nocturnal, so are most active at night. They have poor eyesight but use their whiskers, sense of smell, and touch to navigate the world around them. There are about 20 species of hamster and the Syrian hamster is the most popular pet breed. They can be a golden colour and are often known as ‘Golden’ hamsters. Syrian hamsters usually live on their own in the wild, in comparison to other breeds that would naturally live in groups.
